Netherwilds, the medieval metal project led by David Monks of Tokyo Police Club, has announced its debut album Peasant Rising, set for release October 9 through King Volume Records. Alongside the announcement, the band shared a new single, “Siege Proof Hovel,” which includes a mandolin performance from collaborator Hole Dweller.

The song continues the ongoing story of Worm Chewer, a downtrodden peasant character whose journey across the album moves from personal hardship toward organized rebellion against feudal rule. In “Siege Proof Hovel,” Worm Chewer attempts to fend off a lord’s hunting party using a homemade moat and misplaced confidence, only to learn that his one man stand isn’t enough to challenge the ruling class alone. The character sums up his mindset in character, saying he’d rather watch attackers “perish from within my siege proof hovel.”

The track follows the project’s debut single “Return the Goat” and serves as another chapter in the 22 track concept album, which blends black metal, doom, and medieval folk with a narrative told partly through spoken “scroll” interludes. The album was produced and mixed by Jesse Turnbull.

Peasant Rising is available for pre-order now, with “Siege Proof Hovel” streaming ahead of the album’s October release.
